Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Beechview and across Pittsburgh since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.
The gallery on this page is from Beechview homes where our own crew did siding, trim and window work. The worn roof photos further down are from other Pittsburgh roofs we replaced.

Beechview became a borough in 1905, the same year the light rail line came through, and it joined Pittsburgh a few years later. Its streets follow a grid over very hilly ground, which is how Canton Avenue ended up with a grade of about 37 percent.
About half of Beechview homes were built before 1940, and close to nine in ten before 1960. Steep lots and tight streets mean the dumpster, ladders and materials have to be planned before the tear off starts.

On roofs this old the shingles usually give out first. They lose their granules, curl and crack, and the flashing at the chimney is often patched and failing by the time someone calls.
We take the roof down to the deck, replace any soft wood, put down ice and water protection and synthetic underlayment, and flash the chimney fresh before the new shingles go on.

Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.
What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!
Beechview is part of the City of Pittsburgh, so permits go through the city's Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections. PLI lists roofing as work under its residential minor alterations building permit, and roofing is not on its list of work that needs no permit. We take care of the permit for your job.
For an owner occupied home, Pittsburgh asks for the contractor's Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration when the permit is pulled. We are registered and carry liability insurance, and we can send proof before the job starts.
Yes, with a city permit. A dumpster in the street needs a construction staging permit from the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, which asks for time to review it. We plan the dumpster and the permit well before the tear off.
Yes. On Beechview homes we have installed new siding over fanfold insulation, new soffit, fascia and seamless gutters, wrapped windows, and on one job removed two old chimneys.
Yes. We also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows.
It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
