Peters Township Roofs, Usually Done in a Day

Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Peters Township and across the South Hills since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.

We have not posted a finished Peters Township job yet, so the photos on this page are from roofs our own crew replaced in nearby South Hills towns. No stock photography.

What Peters Township Roofs Are Actually Like

Peters Township stayed rural until the 1950s and has grown into one of the larger suburbs south of Pittsburgh. More than half of its homes were built in 1980 or later, and the median home went up in 1983.

That puts a lot of Peters roofs at or past the age where an original asphalt roof wears out, which is typically 20 to 30 years. Many are still on the roof the builder put on, and that is usually the one we are replacing.

What We Find Under Peters Township Shingles

Once the old roof is off we can see the whole deck. Any board or sheet that has gone soft gets cut out and replaced before anything new goes down, because a new roof is only as solid as what it is nailed to.

Then the roof gets ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment across the rest, new drip edge and fresh flashing, so water has a clean path off the roof.

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say

Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.

Alan Landy and his team of workers replaced my roof and did a fantastic job. They were timely and efficient. Cleaned up and done in a day. I would highly recommend them.

Great group of workers. They were in and out in 1 day. The cleanup was spotless as well. They left no nails in my rock bed or grass

What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!

Roofing Questions in Peters Township

The township's building permit guidelines say permits are not required for purely cosmetic changes such as shingle replacement, but structural work such as rafters, headers or roof sheathing does need one. If we find structural work once the old roof is off, we handle the permit before that work goes ahead.

For alterations the township asks for the contractor's certificate of liability insurance. We carry it and can send the certificate before the job starts.

Most homes are a one day job. A large roof with many hips and valleys, or a lot of bad decking, can run into a second day. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start.

If your home was built in the 1980s or 1990s and still has its first roof, it is likely near the end of its life. Curling or cracked shingles, lost granules in the gutters and leaks in more than one spot are the usual signs. We give you an honest answer after a free inspection.

Yes. We also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows.

It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
