Most Bethel Park Roofs Are a One Day Job

Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Bethel Park and across the South Hills since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.

Every photo on this page is from a Bethel Park home our own crew worked on, from the tear off to the finished flashing at the chimney.

What Bethel Park Roofs Are Actually Like

Bethel Park grew up as a postwar suburb. About two thirds of the homes here were built between 1940 and 1979, and the median home went up in 1964.

A lot of these houses have had a rear addition, a porch or a garage added over the years, so one home can carry two or three roof sections that meet at different heights. Those joints and the edges around them are where we spend the most time.

What We Find Under Bethel Park Shingles

Once the old roof is off we can see the whole deck and every edge. Any wood that has gone soft gets replaced before anything new goes down, because a new roof is only as solid as what it is nailed to.

Then the roof gets synthetic underlayment, new drip edge at every edge and fresh flashing at the chimney, so water has a clean path off the roof instead of finding the seams.

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say

Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.

Great group of workers. They were in and out in 1 day. The cleanup was spotless as well. They left no nails in my rock bed or grass

What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!

Roofing Questions in Bethel Park

Bethel Park sets its building permit fees by the estimated value of the work, and it doubles the fee when work starts before a required permit is issued. We confirm with the municipality whether your roof needs a permit and pull it before the job when it does.

Most Bethel Park homes are a one day job. A house with several roof sections, a low slope addition or a lot of bad decking can run into a second day. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start.

A lot of Bethel Park homes have a newer section tied into the original roof. Where the two meet is a common leak point, so we flash those joints and walls fresh rather than reusing old metal. A low slope section gets a membrane made for its pitch instead of shingles.

Yes. We check every board once the old roof is off and replace any wood that will not hold a nail. We show you what came off.

Yes. New step and counter flashing goes in at the chimney with the new roof. Old flashing is the most common source of leaks we find, and reusing it is how a new roof ends up leaking.

Yes. We also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows. On one Bethel Park job we redid the siding, gutters, soffit and fascia on the rear addition and added eave vents for better airflow.

It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
