Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Mount Washington and across Pittsburgh since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.
The photos on this page are from a Mount Washington home where our crew took off the old slate roof and replaced it.

Mount Washington was known as Coal Hill in Pittsburgh’s early years and had taken its current name by 1876. The Monongahela Incline was built in 1869 and 1870, and the Duquesne Incline opened in 1877.
More than half of the homes on the hill were built before 1940. Steep lots and tight streets make staging a tear off harder than in most neighborhoods, and the exposure up here is hard on a roof.

On the Mount Washington job in these photos the old slate came off first, and the decking underneath was checked board by board. The bad sections were replaced before anything new went down.
Then came ice and water underlayment, synthetic underlayment across the whole deck and the new shingles, with the flashing redone at the chimney.

Roofing Since
Roofing is most of what we do here, and we handle the rest of the exterior while the crew is already on site.

Leaks, missing shingles, flashing and storm damage.
Vinyl siding and trim for Mount Washington homes.
Seamless gutters and downspouts sized for our rainfall.
Rebuilding the trim and venting at the roof edge.
Replacement windows that fit original openings.
Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.
What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!
Mount Washington is part of the City of Pittsburgh, so permits go through the city's Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections. PLI lists roofing as work under its residential minor alterations building permit, and roofing is not on its list of work that needs no permit. We take care of the permit for your job.
For an owner occupied home, Pittsburgh asks for the contractor's Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration when the permit is pulled. We are registered and carry liability insurance, and we can send proof before the job starts.
Yes, with a city permit. A dumpster in the street needs a construction staging permit from the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, which asks for time to review it. We plan the dumpster and the permit well before the tear off.
Yes. On one Mount Washington home we removed the existing slate, replaced the damaged decking and installed ice and water underlayment, synthetic underlayment and a new shingle roof.
Yes. We also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows.
It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
