Mount Lebanon Roofs, Done Without the Shortcuts

Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Mount Lebanon and across the South Hills since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.

The photos on this page are from Mount Lebanon roofs our own crew replaced, taken while the new roofs were going on.

What Mount Lebanon Roofs Are Actually Like

Mount Lebanon grew up as a streetcar and then an automobile suburb, and about two thirds of its homes were built before 1960. Its National Register nomination calls Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival the dominant styles, with many Craftsman bungalows and Foursquares too.

Those houses mean steep pitches, gables, dormers and chimneys, and roofs that started out as slate, tile or asphalt shingle. A roof like that takes more care at every valley and wall than a simple ranch roof does.

What Goes On Under a Mount Lebanon Roof

On our Mount Lebanon jobs the old roof comes off down to the deck, and the deck is checked and repaired before anything new goes on. Then comes ice and water protection where the roof needs it most and synthetic underlayment across the rest.

Every vent pipe and chimney gets sealed and flashed, and the roof is finished with architectural shingles and ridge vents so the attic can breathe.

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say

Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.

Great group of workers. They were in and out in 1 day. The cleanup was spotless as well. They left no nails in my rock bed or grass

What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!

Roofing Questions in Mount Lebanon

Mount Lebanon requires a permit for structural roof repairs. If your job turns into structural work, such as replacing rafters or a large section of sheathing, we pull the permit before that work starts. We can tell you which applies once we have seen the roof.

Yes. Steep pitches, gables and dormers are normal in Mount Lebanon. They take more staging and more flashing work than a simple roof, and we plan for that in the estimate instead of finding it on install day.

Many Mount Lebanon homes are a one day job. A steep roof with several dormers, a lot of bad decking or a chimney that needs rebuilding can run into a second day. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start.

Yes. The deck is checked once the old roof is off, and any section that will not hold a nail gets replaced before the underlayment goes down.

Yes. On one Mount Lebanon job we installed new seamless gutters with gutter guards and a custom chimney cap along with the new roof.

Yes. We also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows.

It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
