Most Dormont homes went up before 1940, so the roofs have steep slopes, dormers and valleys rather than a simple gable. A fair number are duplexes carrying two households under one roof, and many have already been through one or two layers of shingles.
Lots here sit about a driveway apart under mature street trees. We plan where the dumpster goes before the tear off starts, and we keep the valleys clear, because leaves sitting in a valley are what rot it out.

Many of these houses pair a steep front with a low slope roof over the back porch or addition. Shingles do not belong on that section, and when we find them there they are usually the leak the homeowner called about. It gets a membrane made for the pitch instead.
Homes from this era were sheathed with wood boards, not plywood. After ninety odd years we often find boards gone soft at the chimney and in the valleys. We replace bad decking and rebuild the flashing instead of sealing over it.

Yes. Dormont Borough says so in its own permit FAQ, and the Building and Zoning Department lists replacing more than 25 percent of a roof as work that requires a permit. The borough has a dedicated Roof Permit Application. There is a fifty dollar non refundable residential application fee, the permit itself is priced by roof area on the borough fee schedule rather than by the cost of the job, and a copy of the contractor's current certificate of insurance has to be attached to the application. No property survey is needed for roof work.

A house with a complicated rear addition, a low slope section that needs a different system, or a lot of bad decking can run into a second day. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start, not after.

Yes. Roofing is the bulk of our work here, but we also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows. If the roof edge is being rebuilt it often makes sense to deal with the gutters and the fascia in the same visit rather than bringing a crew back later.
It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
