Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Carrick and across the South Hills since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.
Carrick is the neighborhood where we have documented more roof jobs than anywhere else, and every photo on this page is from a Carrick roof our own crew replaced.

Carrick was its own borough from 1904 until it joined Pittsburgh in 1927, and it grew up along the hilltop on Brownsville Road. About half of the homes here were built before 1940, and roughly eight in ten before 1960.
That means most Carrick roofs sit on houses close to a hundred years old, often on hillside lots with steep driveways and tight streets. Getting the crew, the dumpster and the materials staged takes planning before the tear off starts.

On houses this old, the tear off is where the real condition shows. On one Carrick job we found rotted wood along the eave and a chimney with brick that had worn away under the old flashing.
We replace bad decking and eave wood instead of covering it, and we tell you what we found at the chimney before the new roof goes on, so it gets fixed while the roof is open.

Roofing is most of what we do here, and we handle the rest of the exterior while the crew is already on site.

Leaks, missing shingles, flashing and storm damage.
Vinyl siding and trim for Carrick homes.
Seamless gutters and downspouts sized for our rainfall.
Rebuilding the trim and venting at the roof edge.
Replacement windows that fit original openings.
Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.
What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!
Carrick is part of the City of Pittsburgh, so permits go through the city's Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections. PLI lists roofing as work under its residential minor alterations building permit, and roofing is not on its list of work that needs no permit. We take care of the permit for your job.
For an owner occupied home, Pittsburgh asks for the contractor's Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration when the permit is pulled. We are registered and carry liability insurance, and we can send proof before the job starts.
Yes, with a city permit. A dumpster in the street needs a construction staging permit from the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, which asks for time to review it. We plan the dumpster and the permit well before the tear off.
Most Carrick homes are a one day job. A steep hillside lot, a lot of bad decking or a chimney that needs work can run into a second day. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start.
Yes. On one Carrick garage we replaced the bad decking and put on a new two ply membrane roof, a base sheet and a cap sheet, which is the right system for a flat roof instead of shingles.
Yes. We also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows.
It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
