Whitehall Roofs Done Right, Usually in a Day

Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Whitehall and across the South Hills since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.

The photos on this page are from a Whitehall roof our own crew replaced, from the tear off down to the new decking at the eave.

What Whitehall Roofs Are Actually Like

Whitehall became its own borough in 1948, and it filled in fast. The population more than doubled between 1950 and 1960, and about half of the homes here were built between 1940 and 1959.

That makes most Whitehall roofs about seventy years into their life. Many are on their second or third layer of shingles by now, and the decking underneath is as old as the house. We take every layer off rather than shingling over it, so we can see what the wood is doing.

What We Find Under Whitehall Shingles

On this Whitehall job the old roof came off clean across most of the deck, but the wood along the eave had rotted where water had been backing up at the gutter line for years.

You cannot nail a new roof into wood that will not hold a fastener, so the bad sections came out and new decking went down before any underlayment. Then the new Atlas shingle system went on over a solid deck.

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say

Alan Construction did a great job on our roof! They communicated well, got the job done in one day, and quoted me a fair price. I had part of my roof done a few years ago and they matched the shingle color exactly. They also sealed a vent for me on the part of the roof they weren't responsible for at no cost. My parents are getting their roof done next year and will definitely be using Alan Construction! I highly recommend.

Alan Landy and his team of workers replaced my roof and did a fantastic job. They were timely and efficient. Cleaned up and done in a day. I would highly recommend them.

Great group of workers. They were in and out in 1 day. The cleanup was spotless as well. They left no nails in my rock bed or grass

What a positive experience! Alan was thorough in his assessment of my roof, while providing a transparent explanation along with a fair estimate for replacement. He sent a hard working team, lead by Fernando, to execute one hell of a single-day job with minimal interruption. Everyone was professional and courteous every step of the way. I cannot recommend more highly!

Roofing Questions in Whitehall

Whitehall Borough uses Building Inspection Underwriters (BIU) for its building code work, and the borough says most interior and exterior construction requires a BIU construction permit application. Roofing is listed on that application. We check with BIU before the job and handle the paperwork when a permit is needed.

The borough code says any contractor applying for a building permit has to show proof of workers compensation insurance. We carry it, along with our liability coverage, and we can send the certificate before the job starts.

Most Whitehall homes are a one day job. A roof with several layers to strip, or a lot of bad decking underneath, can run into a second day. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start.

Yes. Whitehall homes are around seventy years old, and we often find soft wood along the eaves and around chimneys. We do not shingle over bad decking. Any section that will not hold a nail gets replaced, and we show you what came off.

Yes, and we recommend it. Older Whitehall roofs often have two or three layers stacked up. We strip the roof down to the deck so the wood can be checked and the new roof sits flat.

Yes. Roofing is the bulk of our work, but we also handle siding, seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, and replacement windows. If the roof edge is being rebuilt it often makes sense to deal with the gutters and the fascia in the same visit.

It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
