Brookline takes its name from the town in Massachusetts and was part of West Liberty Borough until it joined Pittsburgh in 1908. The streetcar reached it in 1905, and the neighborhood filled in around the line on West Liberty Avenue.
About eight in ten Brookline homes were built before 1960, and many lots have a detached garage out back. The garage roof is usually the one that gets ignored until it leaks.

Brookline is part of the City of Pittsburgh, so permits go through the city's Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections. PLI lists roofing as work under its residential minor alterations building permit, and roofing is not on its list of work that needs no permit. We take care of the permit for your job.
For an owner occupied home, Pittsburgh asks for the contractor's Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration when the permit is pulled. We are registered and carry liability insurance, and we can send proof before the job starts.
Yes, with a city permit. A dumpster in the street needs a construction staging permit from the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, which asks for time to review it. We plan the dumpster and the permit well before the tear off.
Yes. On one Brookline garage we stripped the old shingles and installed new Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles over synthetic underlayment, with drip edge around the perimeter and ice and water shield along the eaves.

It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
