Alan Construction has been replacing and repairing roofs in Shadyside and across Pittsburgh since 2003. Most of our roof replacements are finished in a single day, with the yard cleaned and the magnet run before we leave.

Shadyside joined Pittsburgh in 1868. More than a third of its homes were built before 1940, and about half before 1960.
On the older houses that means steep roofs, dormers and several chimneys, often on their second or third roof. Every one of those details needs its own flashing done right.

Once the old roof is off we can see the whole deck. Any board or sheet that has gone soft gets cut out and replaced before anything new goes down, because a new roof is only as solid as what it is nailed to.
Then the roof gets ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment across the rest, new drip edge and fresh flashing, so water has a clean path off the roof.

Shadyside is part of the City of Pittsburgh, so permits go through the city's Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections. PLI lists roofing as work under its residential minor alterations building permit, and roofing is not on its list of work that needs no permit. We take care of the permit for your job.
For an owner occupied home, Pittsburgh asks for the contractor's Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration when the permit is pulled. We are registered and carry liability insurance, and we can send proof before the job starts.
Yes, with a city permit. A dumpster in the street needs a construction staging permit from the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, which asks for time to review it. We plan the dumpster and the permit well before the tear off.

It is hard on a roof. Pittsburgh averages a little over 44 inches of snow a year and roughly 114 nights at or below freezing, but only about 32 days that stay below freezing all day. That means something like 80 days a year where water melts and refreezes. Freeze and thaw cycling is what works shingles loose, opens up flashing and finds any weak spot at a valley or a chimney.
