When you compare architectural shingles vs 3 tab, architectural shingles win for almost every Pittsburgh home that will be lived in for years: they’re thicker, they hold up better in wind and freeze and thaw, and they look far better from the street. A 3 tab roof costs less up front, but it’s a thinner, flatter product that usually comes with a shorter warranty and less wind protection.
We’ve been doing roof replacement in Pittsburgh since 2003, and the choice of shingle is part of every roof we quote. Below is a plain comparison of how the two shingles are built, how they handle our weather, how they look, and when a 3 tab roof still makes sense.
Short answer: pick architectural shingles if you plan to stay in the house, want better wind and storm performance, or care about curb appeal. A 3 tab roof only makes sense for a tight budget on a home you’ll sell soon, or a small outbuilding.
What Is the Difference Between 3 Tab and Architectural Shingles?
Both are asphalt shingles. Both have a fiberglass mat, asphalt, and a layer of mineral granules on top. The difference is in how many layers there are and how the shingle is shaped.
A 3 tab shingle is a single flat layer with two cutouts along the bottom edge, so each strip looks like three equal tabs. Once it’s on the roof you get an even, repeating grid pattern, like rows of bricks.
An architectural shingle, also called a dimensional or laminated shingle, is two or more layers bonded together, with the bottom layer showing through in random tabs of different widths. That creates shadow lines and depth that look more like wood shake or slate.

Look closely at a new architectural roof and you can see the layered edge and the uneven shadow lines. That extra layer is where the added weight, thickness and durability come from.
It also hides things. A roof deck on an older Pittsburgh house is rarely perfectly flat, and the random pattern of a dimensional shingle hides small dips and waves in the decking that a flat 3 tab pattern tends to show off.

Architectural Shingles vs 3 Tab: Side by Side
Here’s how the two compare on the points homeowners care about most. Exact ratings and warranty terms change by product line, so always check the manufacturer’s own spec sheet for the shingle in your estimate.
| Feature | 3 tab shingles | Architectural shingles |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Single flat layer | Two or more laminated layers |
| Look | Flat, uniform grid | Dimensional, shadowed, shake or slate look |
| Weight and thickness | Lighter, thinner | Heavier, thicker |
| Wind performance | Lower wind ratings in general | Higher wind ratings, often tied to a full system |
| Warranty | Usually shorter | Often a lifetime limited warranty |
| Up front cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best fit | Short term ownership, sheds, garages | Long term homes, resale, storm exposure |
How Each Shingle Handles Pittsburgh Weather
Our roofs take a different kind of beating than the ones you read about in national articles. We don’t get much extreme heat, but we get long stretches of freeze and thaw, heavy wet snow, gusty spring and summer storms, and a lot of shade from mature trees on hilly lots.
Wind. The ridge and the edges catch the most wind, and on a hillside street they catch it hard. A thin 3 tab shingle can lift, crease and tear off in a storm. A heavier laminated shingle with a strong seal strip stays down better.
Freeze and thaw. Water that gets into cracks freezes overnight and pries them wider. A thicker shingle has more material to lose before the mat is exposed, so it tends to age more slowly.
That’s why the ridge cap and edge details matter as much as the shingle you pick.

Shade and algae. Tree cover on north facing slopes keeps roofs damp, and that’s where black algae streaks show up first. Many architectural lines now include algae resistance. The Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingle, for example, uses 3M Scotchgard Protector to help prevent the black streaks algae causes, according to Atlas Roofing.
Granule loss. All asphalt shingles shed some granules as they age. Heavy granule loss in the gutters on a 3 tab roof is often a sign the roof is near the end. Our post on why asphalt shingles lose granules and when to worry explains what to look for.
Wind Ratings and Warranties: Read the Fine Print
This is where architectural shingles pull clearly ahead, but the details matter. Wind and warranty coverage usually depends on the full roofing system being installed to the manufacturer’s rules, not just the shingle.
We install Atlas shingles, including Pinnacle Pristine. Atlas lists Pinnacle Pristine as an architectural shingle with Class 3 impact resistance and a wind warranty of up to 160 mph when it’s installed as part of an Atlas Signature Select Roofing System, backed by the Atlas Lifetime Limited Warranty. The coverage requirements are spelled out in the Atlas Roofing Limited Shingle Warranty.
A 3 tab line generally carries lower wind coverage and a shorter warranty. If someone quotes you a 3 tab roof, ask to see the warranty sheet for that exact product so you can compare the two in writing. For a wider look at manufacturers, see our guide to which roofing brands are most reliable.
Curb Appeal and Resale Value

On a lot of Pittsburgh streets the roof is a big part of what you see from the sidewalk, especially on steep two story homes and houses set up on a hill. A dimensional shingle in a blended color gives the roof texture and depth instead of a flat sheet of gray.
Blends like this brown mix use several shades of granules, so the roof looks warm and varied in sunlight instead of uniform.
When you sell, buyers and home inspectors notice the roof. A newer architectural roof with a manufacturer warranty on file is an easy point in your favor.

When a 3 Tab Roof Still Makes Sense
There are a few cases where a 3 tab shingle is a reasonable choice.
You’re selling soon
If the house is going on the market in the next few years and the roof has to be replaced first, a lower up front cost can matter more than a long warranty.
Detached garages and sheds
A small outbuilding that isn’t seen much from the street doesn’t always need the same shingle as the house.
Very tight budgets
If the choice is a 3 tab roof now or living with leaks, a properly installed 3 tab roof beats a failing one. Ask about financing first, though.
For everyone else, especially families planning to stay put, the architectural shingle is the better long term value because you’re not paying for another tear off as soon.
Why a Full Replacement Beats Patching an Old 3 Tab Roof
Plenty of older homes around Pittsburgh still have 3 tab roofs, and some have a second layer on top. When those roofs start losing tabs, patching becomes a losing game. The old shingles are brittle, new 3 tab pieces rarely match the faded color, and every repair disturbs the seal strips around it.
A full replacement lets us strip the roof down to the deck, fix soft spots, put down new underlayment, and redo the flashing around chimneys, vents and walls. Those details are where most leaks start, not in the open field of shingles.
Our post on why roofing underlayment matters covers the layers under the shingles.

What Drives the Cost Difference
We don’t publish prices because every roof is different, but we can tell you what moves the number. Architectural shingles cost more per bundle than 3 tab, and that’s only part of the bill. The size and pitch of the roof, how many layers have to come off, how much decking needs replacing, the number of chimneys, skylights and valleys, and how easy it is to get a dumpster close all play a bigger role.
That’s why the gap between a 3 tab roof and an architectural roof on the same house is usually smaller than people expect. Labor, tear off and materials like underlayment and flashing stay about the same whichever shingle you choose. A free, no obligation estimate will show you both options on your actual roof.
