A roof replacement is a major home improvement project that requires some preparation on your part. Taking time to prepare before your crew arrives will help the project run smoothly and protect your property from damage. Here’s what you need to do to get ready.
Protect Your Belongings Inside
Roof replacement creates vibrations throughout your house. Remove or secure items on walls like picture frames, mirrors, and shelves. These can shift or fall during the work. Move fragile items from high shelves and secure anything that might shake loose.
If you have items stored in your attic, cover them with tarps or plastic sheeting. While contractors use protective measures, dust can still filter through, especially during the tear-off phase.
Clear the Driveway and Yard
Your roofing crew needs space for their trucks, a dumpster, and material storage. Clear your driveway completely and ask your contractor where they’ll need access. Move vehicles to the street or a neighbor’s driveway if possible.
Walk around your house and move anything within 15 feet of the structure. This includes patio furniture, grills, potted plants, garden decorations, and children’s toys. Debris will fall during tear-off, and having a clear perimeter makes cleanup easier and safer.
If you have landscaping near the house, mark any delicate plants or sprinkler heads so the crew can work around them.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Tree branches hanging over or near your roof can interfere with the work and create safety hazards. Trim back any branches within 10 feet of your roof before the crew arrives. This gives them clear access and prevents damage to the trees during installation.
Plan for Noise and Disruption
Roof replacement is loud. Hammering, power tools, and materials being moved create significant noise from early morning until late afternoon. If you work from home, plan to work elsewhere during installation days. If you have young children or pets, consider arrangements to keep them comfortable.
Let your immediate neighbors know when the work is scheduled. It’s a courtesy they’ll appreciate, especially if they work from home or have small children.
Protect Your Vehicles
Park vehicles away from the house during the project. Falling nails, shingle pieces, and other debris can damage car paint and windshields. Even with tarps and careful cleanup, small pieces of material can travel surprisingly far.
Make Arrangements for Pets
The noise, activity, and strangers walking around can stress pets. If possible, keep pets inside and away from windows during work hours, or arrange for them to stay elsewhere during the loudest days. Make sure your contractor knows you have pets so they can keep gates closed and watch for animals.
Prepare for Limited Attic Access
You won’t be able to access your attic during the project. If you need anything stored there, get it out beforehand. The crew may also need attic access to inspect the deck, so clear a path to your attic entrance.
Communicate Special Concerns
Tell your contractor about any special considerations like satellite dishes, solar panels, security cameras, or unusual roof features. Point out any areas of concern like previous leaks or damage you’ve noticed. The more information they have upfront, the better they can plan.
Day of Installation
On installation day, contractors typically arrive early and work full days. Make sure all outdoor preparations are complete the night before. Give the crew clear access to your home’s exterior and stay available to answer questions, but give them space to work safely.
